Self help tactics come in a myriad of forms. Sometimes they require tremendous effort and energy just to stay focused. Sometimes, however, all we need to do is implement small and more gradual changes, changes that require much less energy but that in the long run accomplish the same purpose.
Setting goals is a critical step in improving your sense of direction and purpose in life. Depression closes in on you quite easily once you abandon a concrete schedule and a furious pursuit of goals. Choose something important to you and strive for it from the moment you wake up in the morning. This can improve your holistic health and contribute to a happier mindset.
The most critical way to improve your mental outlook and sense of purpose is to believe in something larger than yourself. Search for something (a cause, a purpose, a religion, etc.) that moves you. You must believe in this intrinsic merits of this cause in themselves; if you pursue it simply for your own benefit, you will be disappointed. Find something you believe in and immerse yourself in it.
Happiness is often lost to stress. When our mind is stressed, our body suffers. Letting go of stress can be the key to better thinking and meeting our goals with clear purpose and calm intent. Have some time every day when you can relax and meditate in solitude. This mental break each day will improve your peace and clarity of mind, and help improve your self-image.
Work on discovering your personal strengths. Try making a list of the ones you know and try making a list of your weaknesses that hold you back from being the strong person that you think you are or could be. Even opinions from others, like friends or family, can give you some insight on how to better yourself.

There are seven steps to success. The first is having direction, while the second is knowing where the destination lies. The third key is knowing when to take action. Fourth, react when a situation prompts you to. Fifth, accelerate when you are able to to get closer to your goals. Sixth, complete what you start. Finally, you should reproduce the above steps to guarantee continued success.
Identify bad values in your life. Systemic and institutional bias can lead us to internalize faulty things, so it’s best to address any flaws in your belief system on your path to personal development. The better you understand the basis of your beliefs, the better you will feel about adhering to it.
Praise others, flatter them, and show your appreciation. By being proactive and reaching out, being nice to others will help you to treat yourself nicely as well.

You must be able to concentrate and focus if you plan on being successful in this life. No one can make it in this world by just talking and offering opinions all the time. You must be able to listen, and you must be able to take time to learn about new things in a concentrated manner.
